Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation, What is this? 

Anyone have any idea about it? Do you know what they mean and what they do?

Mostly the answer will be No!

This article will give you a little bit inside of what Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation is. Let’s start knowing about it by first looking at the meaning of both of the motivations.

Motivation, a reason that helps us acting or behaving in a particular way. And Intrinsic and Extrinsic are the two types of motivation.

Extrinsic motivation is an external form of motivation. For example, In your professional life there comes a point where your promotion is dependent on a project that you need to crack and work on and on the successful completion of that project your boss has promised you your promotion that is a very clear form of extrinsic motivation. In fact in this example there are two extrinsic motivators: your boss’s expectations and the promotion. Extrinsic motivation does not need to be another person always; it can be some demand from outside, obligation, or reward that requires the achievement of a particular goal.

Intrinsic motivation, however, is an internal form of motivation. The strive towards a goal that leads to personal satisfaction or accomplishment is an Intrinsic motivation. You can work even towards a long – term goal or reward for your business or a competition, but in this also your primary motivator is internal. (Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation)

In more simple words intrinsic motivation means you do something because you enjoy doing it and you are interested in that. That love and interest gives you motivation to do that work and you are happy from inside this is known as intrinsic motivation. On the other hand extrinsic motivation depends on external factors and rewards or to avoid negative consequences that can happen with you. Factors like reward or getting something physical in return becomes your motivation to achieve that and this is known as extrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation are different from each other but do the same work. It gives you motivation to achieve something. In life internal and external both kinds of motivation are important, if we have both forms of motivation in our life it gives a balance in our personal and professional life. Intrinsic motivation somehow makes us more happy from our personal point of view and extrinsic motivation works great in the professional field.

So having both Intrinsic and Extrinsic is like having a fulfilling and lovely motivating life.

Motivate is the thing that describes the wants and needs that directs us towards our goal. An emotion is a subjective state of being that we often describe as a feeling within us. Motivation and emotion both are linked with each other in several ways; they both influence our behaviour and lead us to take actions that we have to take, on other hand emotion acts as a motivator itself. For example, when you are facing the emotion of fear it can lead you to motivate a person to leave a stressful situation, while the emotion of happiness motivates a person to be more productive on a certain work that reinforces that emotion within. In the aspect of human behaviour motivation is very important. Your choice is certainly influenced by the motivational state of your mind when you make a decision. If you are motivated, you learn better and remember more of what you learned. In our society, it is common for authority figures to introduce competition as a means to increase people’s motivation and performance. In sum, motivation matters. We at the same time need a comprehensive picture of how different types of motivation can fit and function together within us to produce a behaviour that turns into motivation of achieving something.

The difference between Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation lies in the reason for doing something. People can engage in some similar goals but with different purposes, and therefore different motivation is shown and required.

Intrinsic v/s extrinsic motivation, it is difficult to choose between two of them as they both are equally important and required in one’s life to accomplish something.

If you engage in an activity that gives you satisfaction and happiness then it is intrinsic motivation but if you are engaged in an activity to win the reward so the motivation behind that is called as an extrinsic motivation. Similarly if you are washing utensils just because you like cleaning then it is known as intrinsic motivation but on the other hand if you are washing utensils just to get some extra allowance then it is an extrinsic motivation. 

Intrinsically motivated behaviours are performed because of the sense of personal satisfaction that they bring. Intrinsic motivation thus represents the reward in the satisfaction of performing the activity itself. 

On the other hand extrinsically motivated behaviours are performed in order just to receive something in return from others and have some reward after the achievement. The Extrinsic rewards are mostly shown to someone who shows a little interest in an activity that they need to complete so to give them so kind of motivation rewards are used and this is the form of extrinsic motivation. Let’s be honest, intrinsic motivation sounds more interesting than extrinsic motivation, doesn’t it? When you are intrinsically motivated, you can, you are less dependent on external factors and you are able to focus more keenly on the tasks at hand. Looks that way, but that’s not always the case. 

Intrinsic motivation is for those who are more task-oriented. They are quite the opposite of extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is for those who are more result-oriented. They focus more on rewards, promotions, trophies or something in return.

You need both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to accomplish your daily task and stay motivated. So when we do intrinsic and extrinsic motivation we will end up agreeing on both the types as they are something that every needs. We all need some internal satisfaction with some physical reward also so here intrinsic and extrinsic motivation takes place together to finish the work or goal that you are working on.

What you need is a bit more than just an inner push with a little reward along with that to achieve.

Incentive theory is based on the idea that behaviour is primarily extrinsically motivated.  Instinct is a fixed, inborn pattern of behaviour that acts as a drive. Therefore, Instinct Theory postulates that behaviours occur so we can satisfy basic survival needs. Although some of the motivational theories argue that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation have some addictive effects on the performance of the person and the satisfactory level, research tells that these two types of motivation tend to interact with each other. Specifically, when extrinsic rewards are offered to a person for doing an intrinsically motivated activity, the rewards can either enhance or diminish the person’s intrinsic motivation.

Extrinsic motivation is internalized effectively to change the central distinction in motivation from intrinsic v/s extrinsic motivation.

In the world of marketing motivation is very important because the field of marketing needs a lot of patience and courage to work in. Marketing is a field where a person needs lots of confidence and concentration. If they don’t have the confidence in their own product/service then they will fail to sell that in the market and that will be a big failure for all the marketing people. On the other hand the marketing tactics for intrinsic marketing works on creating feelings and satisfaction at individual level within the prospect and buyer. The intrinsic marketing tactics include some participative experience, social responsibility, or feelings. A good example of this might be offering to donate money to charity with the purchase of a product/service.


Studies show that humans respond more powerfully to intrinsic rewards and this rule applies in the marketing arena as well. Extrinsic motivation can be useful from time to time but it does not have a lasting impact, it can play a role of temporary motivation but not permanent. While intrinsic motivation has its impact for a longer time and in marketing it builds the compound and grows over time. So what do you think will be a good investment? We should not neglect the power of intrinsic motivation in marketing. When selling a service or product intrinsic can work for a long term goal as people get connected to something emotionally, it can be more effective to target others’ intrinsic motives. Researchers say that intrinsic motivation is more of an individualized and is effective at creating lasting, long-term changes in behaviour.
